This brand new 5-day class has been specifically developed for students desirous of being far more experimental using machine-piecing techniques. Students will be expected to work spontaneously and intuitively with nontraditional quilt-making techniques as they explore design exercises that promote improvisational approaches to composition without benefit of “pre-planning” and “intellectualizing.” The workshop will be used as a basis for flexing muscle memory in developing a more fluid approach to cutting improvisationally all sorts of shapes and lines. Emphasis will be placed on forming new configurations that could be used as the motif or subject matter of a figure/ground composition. Color, and the values of color, from light to dark, will be emphasized in all exercises.   Location: Tucson, Arizona Instructor: Nancy Crow, www.nancycrow.com Cost: $875 Sponsor: Madeline Island School of the ArtsWebsite, email, (715) 747-2054

In celebration of the 100th anniversary year of the 19th amendment, Re-Vision 20/20: Through a Woman’s Lens looks at objects in the Winterthur galleries through the lens of women’s stories, recognizing the everyday women who forged a better path for themselves, and ultimately for future generations, in creative, intellectual, and entrepreneurial ways. Drawing upon Winterthur’s vast museum and library collections, and highlighting objects and manuscripts representing more than three centuries of history, the objects in these galleries reveal unexpected and surprising stories that touch upon complex issues associated with gender, race, politics, religion, celebrity, and more. Objects once solely interpreted for their significance in relation to men’s stories are now re-visioned by casting the lens of women’s history on them and uncovering stories of women who were not only creators and thinkers in their time but also society’s disruptors and influencers. Curator's Gallery Walks for this installment will occur the first Tuesday of each month at 2:00 pm.

Location: Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library 5105 Kennett Pike (Route 52) Wilmington, DE. | Start: 10/27/2020 10:00:00 AM End: 10/27/2020 5:00:00 PM

September 1st- October 31st Cadence Opening reception- September 4th, 6-9pm In cycling and running one learns to develop a cadence, a steady rhythm in motion, all moving parts and determination in synch to see keep at the task and all the way to the end. The consistent rhythm becomes meditative, as one settles into a oneness, despite possible difficulties, but all such extraneous distractions drift away and are kept at bay. It’s not always about speed, but a consistency and the achievement of the desired goal. There is a peace found in the time spent outdoors as one seemingly flies through space, a harmony the body all together in unison. Our shared experience in the Covid-19 shutdown has dramatically increased some peoples concerns, anxiety, and stress, but also involvement in home life and community. For some there was a slowing down of socializing, productivity, and personal care, while others embraced the calm allowed for personal care of the mind, body, and soul, able to smell the blooming roses and take up backyard bird watching. Our “normal” patterns and movements greatly altered and new routines have been adopted as a result of the forced recalibration. The impetuous was initially the kinetic activities, accessories, and surroundings but much has changed for us in the first half of the year and the concept seems to lend to embracing a wider notion of steady keeping at it. Open to the public; please join us for the opening reception on Friday September 4th, 6-9pm for a first look and to meet the artists for personal insights into their unique work. Wine and light fare will be served. Invited artists: Morgan S. Craig Mercedes Deleguardia Perry deVick Kylie Grant Jessica Knapp Emily White

Description: Now is the perfect time to work on some of some hobbies and de-stressing activities, like painting! Many of us have the mistaken idea that only “born artists” can paint. But the truth is much more exciting—with the right training, anyone can learn the skill of painting! The novice will learn the fundamentals of oil painting, from choosing paints and brushes to composition, to a wide variety of specific painting techniques. The experienced painter will gain greater knowledge of oil paints, mediums, lighting, color, and structure. The course includes hands-on experiences for all students, from making your own pigment and paint to copying the methods and compositional choices of the great masters. In The Complete Painter: Lessons from the Masters, you’ll learn to paint using the same steps taught at the best art schools around the country. Your teacher, David Brody, award-winning Professor of Painting and Drawing at of the University of Washington, begins with the basics, taking you on a fascinating deep dive into the physical properties of oil paint itself, including how to work safely with hazardous materials. From there, you’ll move into the study of marks, lines, brushstrokes, and edges; value, color, and palettes; and how to prepare your canvases and rigid supports—including how to transfer the required underdrawings that are provided in your course guidebook. Next, you’ll study techniques by copying from some of the world’s most iconic paintings. Also, as a follow up to this workshop, once we get back to 'normal' offline events, we will look to have social painting classes and chances for us to meet and mingle and share our masterpieces!
